I am listening to an audiobook right now by Rob Bell called How to Be Here. And I just wanted to share a quick anecdote and idea from what I just read in it because it resonated with me. He talks about finding one’s purpose, or reason for getting out of bed in the morning; the steps it can take in your life to find this, or recognize that this changes over time and needs to be shifted, are many. However, he also speaks in this section about not allowing the daunting nature of a task, or even the vastness of it deter you from starting it. For example, if your passion is to write a book, but you can’t think of how the whole thing will go, or how it will end, or if it will be interesting enough to be picked up, published, printed, purchased, and perused by others, you many never even type the first word. This is something that I tend to do without even realizing it. I also feel like this is sometimes the nature of people who procrastinate (although there are many reasons a person may do this). I’m not sure how a project will go, or how I want to start, or how to word something just right, and then all of a sudden it’s due, or I start and it all just flows out in one session. Once I get going, it goes; or it doesn’t and I get inspired to move on in another direction with new knowledge and fueled by new ideas. The point here is, find your one. Find the “step one” thing that needs to be completed, and do it. Don’t worry about step 12, you’ll figure that out when you get there. (Not to say that some planning is required for certain tasks - *See the Meme at the top of this post - lol) but don’t get bogged down in the planning, the overthinking, and the what if’s about if it doesn’t go the way you planned or “right”. Just take the leap. Create something new. Do something that scares you. Dive right in, and see what you are capable of.
